INDOTRENDS.ID - Indonesia has again won the Best Muslim Friendly Destination in the world "Top Muslim Friendly Destination of the Year 2024" in the Mastercard Crescent Rating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI).

The award given in Singapore on Thursday, May 30 2024, confirmed Indonesia in first place as the main destination for Muslim tourists. This achievement marks two years in a row that Indonesia has won this title, namely in 2023 and 2024.

Countries with the Best Muslim Friendly Destinations in 2024

With the end of travel restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the global travel industry is showing a strong and promising recovery. The reopening of international tourism has increased tourist confidence and freedom, resulting in a sharp increase in tourism activity.

Several destinations are taking advantage of this opportunity by improving connectivity, running effective promotional campaigns, creating supportive environments, and improving facilities for Muslim tourists.

Indonesia and Malaysia jointly hold the top position in GMTI 2024. Indonesia is back in the top position after previously sharing first place in 2019 and 2023. Meanwhile, Malaysia continues to maintain its position since GMTI was first launched in 2015.

According to the Mastercard-Crescentrating Global Muslim Travel Index 2024, the countries in the top 10 are:

  • Saudi Arabia, score 74
  • Türkiye, score 73
  • United Arab Emirates, score 72
  • Qatar, score 71
  • Iran, score 67
  • Jordan, score 67
  • Brunei Darussalam, score 67
  • Oman, score 66

According to the Mastercard-Crescentrating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2024, the top ten most friendly countries for Muslim tourists are Indonesia and Malaysia, which both achieved the highest score of 76.

In third place, Saudi Arabia recorded a score of 74, followed by Turkey with a score of 73, and the United Arab Emirates with a score of 72, all of which show improvements in attracting Muslim tourists through supporting infrastructure and services. Qatar, with a score of 71, also topped the list, reflecting significant efforts to increase Muslim tourism.

Furthermore, Iran, Jordan and Brunei Darussalam each obtained a score of 67, indicating significant progress in providing a friendly environment for Muslim tourists. Oman completes the top ten list with a score of 66, demonstrating its position as an increasingly attractive destination for the global Muslim travel market.

This data shows how these countries have succeeded in meeting the needs and preferences of Muslim tourists, through various initiatives such as improved facilities, effective promotions, and services in line with Islamic values.

Indonesia's Ranking in the Best Muslim Friendly Destinations 2015-2024

The Top Muslim Friendly Destination award has entered its ninth year since it started in 2015. Indo

nesia should be proud because for two years in a row it won first place as the best Muslim friendly destination in the world. This shows Indonesia's continued commitment to providing facilities and services that meet the needs of Muslim tourists.

In the Global Muslim Travel Index, Indonesia's ranking continues to show significant improvement from year to year. In 2015, Indonesia was ranked

6th, rose to 4th place in 2016, and continued to rise to 3rd place in 2017.

In 2018, Indonesia was ranked second, before finally reaching first place in 2019. After dropping to 4th place in 2021, Indonesia rose again to 2nd place in 2022, and managed to maintain first position in 2023 and 2024.

Opportunity for Indonesia to Reach 17 Million Tourist Visits

Since being named the top destination for Muslim tourists by the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) in 2023, Indonesia has continued to expand services and promote Muslim-friendly tourism. These efforts aim to extend tourists' stays and increase their spending.

In 2024, Indonesia is prioritizing several main programs, including halal certification for businesses and MSMEs, the Santri Digitalpreneur initiative, the Indonesian Grand Mosque e-catalog, development as a global center for modest fashion, and bilateral collaboration with Saudi Arabia.

The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, hopes that these programs will achieve the target of 17 million foreign tourist visits and 1.5 billion domestic tourist movements by 2024, while also encouraging job creation through halal tourism.
