Prabowo studied in various countries because of the political turmoil in Indonesia at that time. His father, Prof. Soemitro, was linked to the PRRI rebellion in 1957, which forced Prabowo's family to flee abroad. After several years moving around, Prabowo returned to Indonesia and entered military school.
Military Career and Controversies
After graduating from the Magelang Military Academy in 1974, Prabowo was involved in various military operations, including in East Timor. However, he was also involved in a number of controversies, including the alleged kidnapping of pro-reform activists in 1997 and cases of human rights violations in East Timor in the 1990s.
From Paper Entrepreneurs to the World of Politics
After leaving the military, Prabowo became an entrepreneur. His business in the paper sector developed rapidly and generated great wealth. He returned to politics by founding the Gerindra Party and running as a presidential candidate in several presidential elections.
Minister of Defense and 2024 Presidential Candidate
In 2019, Prabowo was appointed Minister of Defense of Indonesia by President Joko Widodo. In 2023, he will again run as a presidential candidate, this time with Gibran Rakabuming Raka as vice presidential candidate.
